What is a Men’s Shed?“Somewhere to Go…Something to Do…Someone to Talk To”…. Established on April 1st, 2023, the Bruce Men’s Shed is part of the Global Men’s Shed Movement. The Bruce Men’s Shed attracts a variety of men from all across the Peninsula from Sauble Beach to Tobermory - for fellowship, activities, projects and general meetings throughout the year. We are affiliated with Men’s Shed Ontario & Men’s Shed Canada. 2023 - Year in ReviewOn April 1st, 2023, the Bruce Men’s Shed adopted our Terms of Reference. The Terms of Reference established our Mission, Vision and Values. On April 29th, 2023, we hosted our first open breakfast in order to get men out and see what might work to create more members standing ‘shoulder-2-shoulder’. General MeetingsOn the 3rd Saturday of each month, the Bruce Men’s Shed hosts a general meeting at the Lion’s Head Legion, Branch # 202. Each meeting starts with coffee and a tasty treat, followed by a little Shed business, and finished off with presentations (external/internal) that allows the men to share a variety of knowledge, skills and abilities that have been accumulated over many years of experience that can be showcased to the other men. Presentations this year have taken place on hydroponic vegetable gardening, straw bale gardening, breeding and training dogs, sea bins, local fishery, karst topography, Bruce Trail, Dark Skies, Camp X, scale modelling and Radon gas to name just a few. Each month the men are encouraged to attend at the Tobermory Men’s Breakfast for fellowship and a presentation on a local interest. Additionally, the men have opportunities to participate in activities, projects and workshops that might be scheduled. |

Weekly Activities - ‘Easy Hikes’During 2023, members of the Bruce Men’s Shed gathered over numerous scheduled dates to hike and enjoy various trail systems on the beautiful Bruce Peninsula. Please check out a cross section of highlights from our series of Fall Hikes in the area. |

Chi-Cheemaun Cardboard Boat RaceIn June 2023, members of the Bruce Men’s Shed went to work building a cardboard boat to enter into the Chi-Cheemaun Festival hosted in Tobermory, ON. Although we were not able to finish the race due to a ‘Kraken’ passing over our path - the men had fun with the project and quite possibly resulted in being selected as the ‘People’s Choice Award’ for best looking watercraft. |

Car Enthusiasts - Sauble Show & ShineIn August 2023, members of the Bruce Men’s Shed took a variety of classic vehicles to the Sauble Beach Car Show & Shine where they enjoyed some fellowship while checking out many other vehicles. |

Work ProjectsThe Bruce Men’s Shed has undertaken a variety of projects - helping to renovate storage area for the Pike Bay Community Center, the Lion’s Head Legion Kitchen, and building bird boxes for the Nature Conservancy of Canada to name a few. During the bird box building sessions, reporters from the Globe & Mail attended to observe a new men’s shed in action as part of a feature on the Men’s Shed Movement across the country. |

Butterfly Project - August 2023Some of the men from the Bruce Shed built a few butterfly boxes and assisted in raising and releasing a quantity of monarch butterflies. |

Model Workshop - Fall 2022 + Fall 2023In the Fall of 2022, the first model workshop was hosted on a trial basis to gauge interest and was deemed a success. In the Fall of 2023, a second workshop was arranged for the men that included planes, trains and automobiles. During the sessions, time was taken for the sharing of information for beginners, those rekindling their ‘Young at Heart’ memories from an earlier age, or those who are model enthusiasts. Painting and airbrushing techniques were also shared during the workshop to give insight into weathering applications to a variety of models. |

Coffee Time Chat - Mondays at 9:00 amEach Monday at 9:00 am, at the Lion’s Head Legion, Branch # 202, the Bruce Men’s Shed hosts a coffee time chat along with a few tasty treats on hand. Men are welcome to drop in for some fellowship, conversation, and discussion about what is currently happening in their lives. The chats are informal and allow the men to connect while getting to know each other a litter bit better. |
